Perfume Genius - Put Your Back N 2 It (2012) / Rating: 2/5
Judging by the lyrical content, this is a deeply personal album for Mike Hadreas that not everyone will find accessible, and I’ll be the first to say I had a hard time getting through a first listen. It’s pretty depressing… like really depressing. It’s not so much the somberness that gets me down, but the way that every song is seemingly the same thing over and over again (only with subtle differences). On top of that, the emotional impact of the songs lost their muster when I was constantly being barraged with what felt like a lot of cheesy arrangements. There are certainly some interesting moments through out the record, but not enough to make me want to come back for more.
